Autodesk returns to the policy of free DWG viewers. The last freely available DWG viewer by Autodesk was Volo View Express. VVE has supported DWG files up to the version 2002. For long time there has been no free Autodesk viewer supporting DWG2004, DWG2005 and DWG2006 formats. If you needed to view these DWG files reliably, you had to buy Autodesk DWF Composer which included a license of Autodesk DWG Viewer.
This is about to change now. Autodesk plans to release Autodesk DWG Viewer for free download now. At the same time a standalone version (independent on AutoCAD) of RealDWG Batch Converter shall be released. This free tool converts DWG formats between individual DWG versions.
